Design Trends of this year and beyond. Cycles and Choices.

If you happened to stumble across our little blog it’s probably because you are looking for some kind of design work, design trend information, or just randomly check whatever you happen to see in your google search results.

If you’ve read any of the various designers talking about design trends you’ll see that it’s placed high on the poll of things we as designers need to care about.

I don’t think that’s really true.

I could have titled this post 5 Design Trends of 2019, 2020, and 2021 including a list and my opinions. Heck, I could have said 5 Design Trends of 2018 to 3018 implying not that I know the future, but that design trends run on a general cycle. That’s implication is interesting because it’s true.

That’s probably the most important thing I’ll note in this post, design trends run in a cycle. No, it’s not an exact cycle, but overall it is what happens. So now you have to make a choice of can you convince clients that your avoidance of design trends is a wise choice or convince clients your vast knowledge of design trends is a wise choice.

As usually there is no easy way of going about this and the reality is not really black or white. Some of what are design trends of 2017 are not trends, they are new standards of our ever evolving digital world. Sorting through what is what will define your design and how you approach clients. How many logos need to now fit onto a mobile phone app icon space? Pretty much all of them and many of them were not designed to fit in such a space. In turn you get responsive design, but this time taking into consideration mobile phones. Even if the client is asking for a full brand package yet has no mobile app we provide a mobile icon anyway as standard. Now that doesn’t mean you should design specifically for that small space, but it could mean that there are design choices you could make that in the end make life easier for yourself and the company going forward.

That’s probably the other important thing I’ll note in this post, your design choices should be made to benefit yourself and the company. Basically as a designer you have a better idea than others of how to structure a logo so it reads well, is visible wherever, and is functional. As for the company they have their purpose and going forward the more clear that is the easier they can navigate their road.

In this day in age it isn’t to much to have a logo design for an internal company project. We think of design as bringing visual order to what is otherwise not ordered. So when applied to anything it can centralize a message and in this case it reinforces the company’s project goal. When you have large projects spanning multiple years and hard deadlines you don’t want fluff getting in the way and so if you can focus the message better you can keep everyone focused better.

In the future Evergreen Design hopes to continue to provide opinion pieces that propose something a little different, but equally worthy of consideration.

Let me know what you think? Do you always look for the latest trends and aim to master them? Or do you feel like your own thing is what makes the sell?
